Location: Los Angeles, California, USA (~3 days per week required in the Laboratory located in Pasadena, LA). Relocation support will be provided for the successful candidate if relocation is required.

We have two main activities: Design and development of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for harvesting of poymentalic nodules and the refining of ore using bacterial respiration which we call bio-extraction. The role is for a senior executive to lead the bio-extraction team as its General Manager and VP. This person will also be part of the leadership team.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Set a vision/strategy/focus/goals and resource allocation for the mineral processing business unit for both polymetallic nodules and terrestrial ores/wastes

  • Lead the Bio-extraction team of scientists based in Pasadena, LA

  • Recruit and lead a new team of engineers to build a pilot Bio-extraction plant

  • Support the Chief Sustainability Officer / VP External Relations in engagement with customers to form partnerships to commercialize and demonstrate this technology

  • Participate in major company strategic decisions as a member of the company leadership team

  • Participate in fundraising including government grant applications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Significant experience in development and commercialization of applied biochemistry , Demonstrated success in managing, motivating and continually strengthening a multi-disciplinary team including scientists and engineers

  • Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to communicate vision, set direction, as well as inspire, motivate and mentor a cross functional team

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills to all employment levels 

  • Ability to work with a remote team, across time zones and with competing priorities

Desirable Additional Experience:

  • Entrepreneur / startup leadership experience

  • Metallurgical or mineral processing experience

  • Master’s degree in chemical engineering

  • Master’s degree in biotechnology

  • Experience in large extractive industry organizations
