Impossible Mining underwater vehicles will be transported by carrier ship

Today, March 28, we announce an exciting partnership with Boskalis. We will soon be exploring the integration of our robotics with Boskalis’s vessel operations in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

“At Boskalis, we know that innovation and disruption are critical to the growth of our company. We are excited to work with Impossible Mining as they develop a transformational approach to sustainable seabed mining,” says Sander Steenbrink, General Manager Corporate Innovation, Research & Development at Boskalis.

We’ve reached a milestone and are revealing our technology on March 30 at Y Combinator — get a preview now.

Our robotics engineers have been developing an end effector — the robotic arm and claw — that will pick up nodules from the seabed without disturbing the ecosystem. Speed and reliability have been improving. We are showcasing our progress to potential seed investors at Y Combinator demo day on March 30.

At Impossible Mining, we know that the delivery of responsible metals must go beyond any standard for mining that exists today.

That’s why we’re bringing a sustainable option to the table. The mining of the deep sea is controversial — habitat at the seafloor is ecologically important, and any dredging of the sea bottom to collect minerals will cause irreparable damage. We have signed a commitment with BetterEV.org, and we are developing a sustainable alternative method of hovering above the sea floor and picking up nodules individually.

We’re securing a market for the battery metals we will eventually collect — to date we have letters of intent from battery manufacturers representing US$500 million in future sales.

(via Politico) The World is set to Debate Seabed mining Regulations but the U.S. Will Be On the Outside Looking In.

Renee Grogan our Co-founder and CSO was interviewed by Politico for an article on the seabed mining debate. The United States has yet to ratify the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This means the U.S. does not have a formal voice on seabed mining in international waters. This may allows China, Russia, etc. to get mining rights and not the U.S.

> Don’t miss this great analysis by Politico

We’re not the only ones who believe our big idea might change the world. Authority Magazine recently ran an in-depth profile on Renee Grogan in which she not only describes her early career in the mining industry (which of course involves a deadly snake, because: Australia), but she describes what we’re all about at Impossible Mining — avoiding widespread habitat destruction, eliminating toxic waste, becoming carbon neutral. “That’s a mammoth undertaking, we know that. But imagine driving an [electric vehicle] that met those criteria,” says Renee.
