Last month, the boards of directors of Tesla and General Motors recommended voting against stockholder proposals to commit to a moratorium on sourcing minerals from deep sea mining.
Tesla’s board confirmed its commitment to responsible sourcing while underlining the complexity of managing its supply chain. It argued that its management, not stockholders, is best positioned to make informed sourcing decisions while adhering to best practices.
General Motors Statement (page 90)
General Motors’ board stated that while GM doesn’t currently use deep-sea minerals, it acknowledges the potential future need and prioritizes a science-based and sustainable supply chain to support its all-electric future. Senior leadership, focusing on environmental impact, will make final decisions regarding deep-sea mineral extraction in the supply chain.
