Labor Risks in Mineral Supply Chains

TThe U.S. Department of Labor just published its 2024 List of Goods Produced by Child Labor or Forced Labor. All four of the metals our autonomous underwater robots will harvest from deep sea polymetallic nodules are on this list of labor exploitation. When the harvesting of deep sea minerals scales, we can replace minerals supplied by these countries, avoiding terrible labor practices.

Impossible Metals’ View on the “Dark Oxygen” Paper Published in Nature

The Impossible Metals team supports the need for additional research on the recent paper sharing findings of the potential for polymetallic nodules to produce oxygen on the seafloor of abyssal plains. Our goal has always been to deliver technology to harvest polymetallic nodules from the seafloor in the most responsible manner possible, and research into dark oxygen will inform our development and planning.
